Network Economy

The Web is an economic system made up of many, many networks, hence the term ‘network economy’ (Kelly, 1997). These networks may be a discussion forum, mailing list, or email – essentially where any computer interacts with another computer. The Internet would not exist without networks, as it survives on a basis that information is continually shared (Kelly, 1997). Presently Netflix acts as a massive hub or node in the Web’s networked economy. Previously, Netflix worked as a network economy sending out DVDs on a subscription service, but the Web has helped Netflix expand this network to an even larger audience. According to Alexa, Netflix is the 53rd most viewed website (2015), which in the scale of the Internet means Netflix it is an incredible network with now more than 65 million subscribers worldwide (Statista 2015).
